Published May 12, 2008

Although western Oregon is known for bountiful precipitation and persistent overcast during much of the year, it’s also a place where solar energy gets its due.

In Hillsboro, SolarWorld Group is manufacturing solar wafers and cells. A unit of Bonn, Germany-based SolarWorld AG, SolarWorld Group is investing about $400 million in the plant, where about 350 people are expected to be working by the end of 2008.

Founded in 1998, SolarWorld AG had about $1 billion in sales in 2007 and now employs about 2,000 people worldwide.
