Making Bridge History in Portland, Vancouver
Published Jun 24, 2008

The period for public comment on a proposed new Interstate 5 Columbia River bridge between Portland and Vancouver, Wash., will end on July 1, 2008.

The existing bridge is actually two separate structures. The first three-lane span opened in 1917; the second, in 1958.

Among the alternatives being studied is a replacement bridge 12 lanes wide and including a light-rail line and improved bicycle and pedestrian paths.

Cost estimates for the new crossing exceed $4 billion.
