Big Grant Will Elevate Sustainability
Published Sep 11, 2008

Portland’s reputation as a green city took on an even greener hue with the announcement that a local foundation will give Portland State University $25 million to research and teach about sustainable environmental practices over the next decade.

The grant by the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation – the largest donation in the school’s history – is contingent on the university’s ability to raise a dollar-for-dollar match.

The Oregonian newspaper on Sept. 10 quoted PSU President Wim Wiewel as saying the money will be used to hire as many as 10 professors. Wiewel said that between 50 and 70 professors on campus already are working at least part of the time on issues associated with sustainability.
