Bubbling with Enthusiasm
Published Mar 12, 2007

It’s water, water everywhere in Portland, with 128 exterior drinking fountains sprinkled around town.

Those fountains include 52 “Benson Bubblers” that feature a distinctive four-bowl design. They are named for Simon Benson, a lumberman and civic leader who paid for 20 fountains in 1912 so that loggers had easy access to something cold – and nonalcoholic – to quench their thirst.

Today, the Benson Bubblers run on timers from 5 a.m.-10 p.m. daily and are maintained by the Portland Water Bureau. The bureau offers a free map that plots a fountain walking tour.
